ADDLESTONE BREWERY

The Addlestone brewery of John A. P. Clarke was in existence at least by 1876, but nothing else is known of its origins. It was acquired by Friary, Holroyd and Healy’s Brewing Company Ltd in 1891 (q.v.)

Another directory entry for Addlestone is that of Johnstone Campbell in 1878. Again, nothing is known and he was probably a publican-brewer. On the other hand, his could have been the brewery acquired in 1880 by Arthur William Thatcher, the owner, from 1855, of the Egham Hythe Brewery (q.v.). He appears to have carried on business of both breweries until 1887. In that year, he either died or retired as both businesses ceased.

F. Daniells, Albert Road, Addlestone. Frank Daniells was born in Wiltshire c1854 and with his brother Robert, set up as an aerated mineral water manufacturer in Albert Road, Addlestone in 1895 having acquired the business of Randall Bros there (Randall Bros having traded between 1887 and 1890). The business remained in Addlestone until about 1909. Two years earlier, Robert moved to Dorking to start his own factory, and Frank set up another premises in Guildford Street, Chertsey. By the end of the 1920’s the firm was firmly established in the latter town. The building was erected in 1857 and was originally a brewery owned by the Porter family. There was a small aerated water business in existence at the time situated at the rear of Nicholsons the Chemists in London Street. This was owned by the Surrey Chemists Co, and was amalgamated with Daniels Ltd. Frank Daniells died in 1926 aged 72.
